I could see how much he appreciated what he had come to possess in life. Love is probably the most important factor here, there is also his career and maybe other things. As much as we value our own lives, there are situations where giving up one's life was in fact much more convenient than hanging on to it. In such situations, it all boils down to how much desire for life one has. Those who survived were the ones with certain something they just would't want to give up yet ...
